"When you asked me about having a secret, I thought it was just a form of greeting." The strong feelings of fondness that arise in an atmosphere of grief. Bloodroot blooming in a glass bowl ("I thought I'd made the most beautiful thing I'd ever made").
"Listen, keep in touch--I know you won't." "Do you ever travel just to get away?" "Are you still drawing and stuff?" "...the way the sun and the full moon work..." What is "natural"?
"She hoped to bring equality and balance to those who had no voice." Where do we go from here? "We will recede back to living..."
Inside the funeral home, seeing pictures of her that kept replacing one another on a screen, I began to cry, with sound, and the old fear of being unable to stop pushed me toward the door, out into the air. In a minute or two, I felt a friendly hand on my shoulder, and her mom said gently, "Is that you making all that noise?" which made me laugh.

"When I was with her, I knew that I was home." No one can believe there is no note.

A shadow broke the light under the door. Swift. Swift, and swiftly gone. "A taste for unified narrative." The ____ is wrong, the right wing wrong. Here she is as a little girl. "Did you ever see a bunny fly?"
"I wish I could recognize myself." Never saw it coming. "I can manage when the pressure is steady but as soon as it wavers, I flip." Yet another rinse. Four rinses? "If I have to ask, I do without."
Already wrong, because: it's not a story. "Basically, I'm talking about all those pictures." Can I help him? I don't believe dreams are blurry. That's a mistake people make. At the table, we try to sort out our questions, one more time.

That same day M. stuck his walking-stick into the imprints left by horses' hoofs on the roadway--it had been raining the day before and they were full of water. "Like memory," he said.

"The word atheos...was only rarely used to refer to those who didn't believe in the gods. More often it meant to be abandoned by the gods..." (Roberto Calasso)

The FAO estimates that right now one billion people in the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition. About 24,000 people die of hunger or hunger-related causes every day.
The Hunger Site.
If you're not stopping by the Hunger Site daily you're missing out on a way to help that is so simple and easy it's practically unbelievable.
Give food for free to hungry people.
Probably you know this, but just in case: All you do is go to the Hunger Site and click on the "Give Free Food" button. That's it. One click a day is the limit, one click gets one cup of staple food to a hungry person. The food is paid for by the Hunger Site sponsors and distributed by America's Second Harvest and Mercy Corps. (Read more about how it works in the FAQs at the site.)
An easy way to remember: do it as soon as you get online in the morning, before you check your email. Or sign up for a daily email reminder. It seems like the least we can do.

Kandinsky: "To speak of mystery in terms of mystery. Is that not content? Is that not the conscious or unconscious purpose of the compulsive urge to create?"
